TLDR
- A knot is a swell near the base of a toy, wider than the shaft. It stretches, pops into place, then holds.
- People love the fullness, the pop and the "I did it" feeling. You don't have to take the whole knot to enjoy one.
- Platinum silicone, a flared base, a soft firmness and plenty of lube. Size down, because the knot is the widest bit.
A knotted dildo (or knot dildo) is a toy with a rounded swell near the base that's wider than the rest of the shaft. It stretches you on the way in, pops into place, and then sits snugly and holds. That stretch, pop and hold, plus the full feeling once it's in, is the whole appeal of a knot toy.
Right then. That's the bit Google wanted. Now the useful bit, from the people who sculpt, pour and sand knots all day (we have opinions, and silicone in places silicone shouldn't be).
How a knotted toy works: the stretch, the pop, the hold
Every knot does the same three things, just at different sizes and speeds.
The stretch. The shaft goes in like any other toy. Then you reach the knot, which is wider, so things open up gradually. This is the part to take slowly. Lots of people stop here for a while and just enjoy the pressure (that's allowed, it's not an exam).
The pop. Once the widest point of the knot passes, your body closes around the narrower bit behind it. That's the pop. It's quick, it's very noticeable, and for a lot of people it's the highlight.
The hold. With the knot inside, the toy stays put. It won't slide back out unless you ease it out, so you get a full, snug feeling you can move with instead of chasing.
Some knots skip the dramatic pop and swell more gently instead. The Werewolf IV Dildo has a mini knot built exactly like that.
Why are knot dildos popular? (The honest answer)
It's the question we get asked most, usually in a slightly embarrassed whisper. No need to whisper. Here's the attraction, plainly.
- Fullness. A knot fills you up in a way a straight shaft can't. That deep, snug pressure is lovely.
- The pop. A clear moment of sensation, then release. People describe it as the toy equivalent of a really good stretch.
- A sense of achievement. Taking a knot for the first time feels like levelling up. Lots of people work up to it over a few sessions, and getting there is genuinely satisfying.
- It stays put. Once it's in, it's in. Great for grinding, for slow rocking, or for just lying there feeling smug.
- Fantasy. Knots come from fantasy anatomy (wolves, dragons, things from the deep). If you like a bit of imagination with your pleasure, they're a natural fit.
And if knots aren't your thing? Fair. But plenty of people try one "just to see" and end up with three.
Types of knot toy (we make quite a few)
Shape first, size later. Here's the family, roughly from classic to creative.
Classic knots. The Knot Dildo is our bestselling Knot: a tapered tip, a subtly ridged shaft and one proper knot. The Knot II Dildo is slimmer and sleeker, and a dream for newbies. The Knot III Dildo is basically Knot I after a few months at the gym.
Werewolf knots. The Werewolf Dildo is a best seller, with a realistic tip, ribbed shaft and a sizeable knot. Werewolf II has a slender tip and a broad, thick knot. Werewolf III has a shorter shaft (get to the good part quicker), and Werewolf IV has that mini knot. They all live in our werewolf dildos.
Dragon knots. The Dragon: Knot I Dildo and Dragon: Knot II pair a scaled base with a smooth, flowing shaft and one knot. Dragon: Knot III and IV go multi knot (more below). Everything about scales and ridges is in our dragon guide.
Tentacle knots. The Tentacle: Knot Dildo has suckers and a gradual knot. Tentacle: Knot II is slimmer, with the knot sitting higher up the shaft. The Entrapped: Tentacle Dildo is coiled, with knot like rings, and goes for girth over length. More in our tentacle dildos.
Multi knots. For the stretch in stages. The Knot IV Dildo has a first swell partway down to warm you up, then a bigger knot. The Dragon: Knot III Dildo and Dragon: Knot IV Dildo have three bulges that grow as you go. Dragon: Knot IV was designed by @critical_queer in our Design a Dildo competition. The Geeyem Dildo is our alien, with two knots, waves and subtle nubs.
Something a bit different. The Satyr Dildo has a flat head and a dash of mythology. The Equiknot Dildo is a classic knot with a slightly flared head. The Capricorn Dildo is our first true double dildo (for double penetration or external clit stimulation), and another Design a Dildo winner.
Vibrating knots. Stretchy silicone sleeves that fit most bullet vibrators: the Knot Bullet Sleeve, the Werewolf Bullet Sleeve, the Geeyem Bullet Sleeve and the Tentacle: Knot Bullet Sleeve. Buy one on its own or with a bullet.
Knots with eggs. The Knot Ovipositor is a knot that lays eggs. Each egg pauses at the knot before pushing through (yes, really, people love it). The rest of the egg layers are in our ovipositors.
Not sure which to start with? We've lined them up by size and rider in How to Choose a Knot Dildo. For dragons specifically, see How to Choose a Dragon Dildo.
Are knotted toys safe? Check two things
Knots are safe when they're made properly. Look for these.
Platinum silicone. It's non porous (nowhere for bacteria to hide), phthalate free, survives boiling, and lasts for years. Skip anything sold as "jelly", "TPE" or "real feel" with no material listed. Every knot we make is hand poured platinum silicone.
A flared base. For anal play, the base must be wider than the shaft and the knot, so the toy can't travel anywhere it shouldn't. Every one of ours has one, and the flared bases fit a standard harness too.
Upgrades worth knowing about: most of our knots can have a double suction cup for hands free play. You can also add a Vac-U-Lock hole, or a cum tube so it can squirt.
Firmness for knots: softer is kinder
Firmness changes a knot more than almost anything else. We pour every toy in one of three:
- Squishy Soft (00-20): our softest. The most forgiving on big knots (basically a marshmallow with ambition).
- Super Soft (00-40): our best seller, and the one we'd pick for a first knot. It squashes a little as the knot goes in.
- Medium (10A): holds its shape, so you feel the full width of the knot. Best for suction cups and harnesses.
Rule of thumb: the softer the toy, the easier the knot. Can't decide? Super Soft. Our firmness guide has videos of all three getting squished.
One sizing tip while we're here: knots run big, so size down from your usual toy. In X-Small, the Knot II and the Dragon: Knot I and II have a knot about 4.5" around, which is a gentle first go. Everything else is in our size guide.
How to take a knot (the short version)
You don't have to take the whole knot. Plenty of people enjoy the press of it and never go further. If you do want the pop:
- Warm up. Fingers or a smaller toy first.
- Lube, then more lube. Water, silicone and oil based lube all work with our silicone.
- Go slow at the knot. Breathe out as it stretches. Pause whenever you like.
- Stop if it hurts. A stretch is fine. Pain isn't. Try again another day.
- Ease it out gently. Relax, more lube, and take your time.
The full step by step, including angles, anal play and what to do if it feels stuck, is in How to Take a Knot Dildo.
Knot care basics
- After every use: warm water and mild soap, then dry with a lint free cloth. Pay attention behind the knot, because lube loves to hide there.
- To sterilise: platinum silicone can go in the dishwasher, be boiled, or soak for 10 minutes in a 10% bleach solution.
- Storage: clean, dry and in an airtight box, away from non silicone toys (PVC and jelly can damage silicone).
- Damage: no teeth, no sharp objects. A small tear can rip further when a knot stretches it, so get in touch if anything goes wrong.
Everything else is in our care guide.

Knot toy FAQs
What's the point of a knotted dildo? Fullness, the pop as the knot passes, and the way it holds in place afterwards. Plus a fair bit of fantasy.
Are knot dildos good for beginners? Yes, in a small size and a soft firmness. The Knot II or Dragon: Knot I or II in X-Small, in Super Soft, is a lovely start.
Is a knot toy for vaginal or anal play? Either. For anal, a flared base is non negotiable, and you'll want extra lube and extra patience.
What's the difference between a knot and a dragon? Lots of dragons have a knot, but not every knot is a dragon. Ours come as classic, werewolf, tentacle, alien and more. The dragon ones add scales.
That's the lot. No pressure, obviously. But if you've read this far, a knot has probably been sitting in your basket for a while. I'd hate for it to get lonely in there. Have a look at our knot dildos when you're ready.
